Places to Visit

  • Hole in the Wall Slide (OR)

    This major landslide which once temporarily dammed the Powder River covers the original road. The new road (on the other side of the river) provides an excellent view of the slide, a unique geographic feature.

    Location on Byway: The slide is just a few miles east of Baker City.

  • Imbler (OR)

    Imbler is a peaceful rural community near La Grande with a rich heritage of the early settlers in the valley.

  • Imnaha River (OR)

    You can camp and fish near the crystal-clear waters of the Wild & Scenic Imnaha. The river also serves as important spawning habitat for steelhead and Chinook salmon.

    Location on Byway: The river runs west of and parallel to the Snake River.

  • Joseph (OR)

    Joseph is a flourishing art community with a national reputation for its top quality bronze galleries and summer activities and events.

  • La Grande (OR)

    La Grande is the home of Eastern Oregon University and is a center for commerce, education, health services, and government.

    Location on Byway: La Grande is at the intersection of I-84 and SRs 82 and 203.

  • Lostine (OR)

    Enjoy a small town celebration of the 4th of July and Flea Market in this turn-of-the century town.

  • Minam (OR)

    The nearby Grande Ronde, Minam, and Wallowa Rivers all offer fishing, rafting, and many other opportunities to enjoy the surrounding area.

  • Minam Grade (OR)

    Starting from the confluence of the Minam and Wallowa rivers, the highway takes a steep climb up the Minam Grade. This dramatic stretch of road provides a commanding view of the Wild & Scenic Minam River and the surrounding steep ridges.

  • National Historic Oregon Trail Center (OR)

    Built and operated by the Bureau of Land Management, this center was built as a monument to emigrants who journeyed on the Oregon Trail. It is highly regarded for the quality of exhibits and the commanding view from its hilltop location.

  • Nez Perce National Historic Trail (OR)

    Explore the land of the Nez Perce on the Nez Perce National Historic Trail, which stretches from Wallowa Lake, Oregon, to the Bear Paw Battlefield near Chinook, Montana.
