America In Miniature

Nicknamed “America in Miniature,” Maryland may be one of the smallest states, but is home to some of the most diverse weather about the state.

These varying climates have given it its nickname, as one can drive through this state and experience many of the identifying features of other parts of the United States, all within one small area.

Despite the state’s small size, it is home to over 4000 miles of shoreline, which led to its early colonization due to its proximity to the ocean. Before colonization, Maryland was home to several Native American groups, including the Algonquin, Iroquois, and Sioux.

Interestingly enough, Maryland was founded with a focus on religious tolerance, which is interesting considering many other early colonies were founded by religious groups looking to protect and develop their own unique religions. Maryland was the 7th state admitted to the union and was one of the original thirteen states.
