Nicknamed the last frontier, Alaska is the largest state in the union by area, larger than Texas, California, and Montana combined. However, Alaska is one of the least populous states in the union, with under 800,000 residents.

While you might be tempted to think of Alaska as variable wilderness, Juneau, the state capital is the second-largest city in the United States by area. This state is flush with gorgeous mountain ranges, breathtaking coastline, and untouched wilderness that baffles the mind. Like every other state in the United States, Alaska was originally occupied by various indigenous peoples before being colonized by the Europeans. Unlike most of the mainland territory of the United States, Alaska was settled not by the French or Spanish, but by the Russians in the 18th century.

However, due to the relative distance from Russia, as well as the veritable wilderness of early Alaska, the land was sold to the United States in 1867 for only about $0.02 per acre. Despite that, Alaska did not become a state until 1959, just under 100 years from when it was first purchased.

What Alaska lacks in ease of access and population density, it makes up for in economic output, with the natural economy built on fishing, natural gas, and oil. Over half of this incredible state is made up of national forests, parks, and wildlife refuges, leading to its overall incredible scenery.
