The Volunteer State

We promise we’ll only make one joke about this state being “the only ten you see.” Tennessee is located in the southeastern region of the United States and is bordered on one side by the Appalachian Mountains. Interestingly enough, Tennessee features a fascinating mix of different terrain and landforms that seem to meld some of the aspects of the southern United States, the Midwest, and the East, into a state that is as fascinating as the people who live there.

Tennessee became the 16th state in 1796. Its name was derived from “Tanasi,” a Cherokee town that existed long before the area became part of the United States. Interestingly enough, Tennessee was the last state to join the Confederacy during the American Civil War, due to a division of loyalty throughout the state. On a more positive note, it was the first state to rejoin the union after the war was over.

While Tennessee used to be a mainly agrarian economy, it grew to be a more diversified economy during the 20th century. Part of this was due to its part housing the Manhattan Project uranium enrichment facilities, but there was much more to this state’s economic growth than just defense planning. Today, Tennessee’s economy features healthcare, music, automotive industries, processed food, tourism, and more.

Speaking of tourism, Tennessee is home to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, an incredible park that features not only the mountain range but also historic locations such as graveyards from early settlers, and historic buildings that can be visited to give you an idea of what early Tennessee settlements were like. Those who are more interested in driving through this incredible state will be treated to mountains, valleys, forests, agricultural areas, and more that are sure to captivate the imagination as well as the eyes.

There are countless National Historic sites that you can visit in this incredible state, as well as historic parks and national parks. Those who are more dedicated when it comes to hiking will find the view atop Mount Le Conte one of the best in the world, while those looking for more casual trails will find plenty of local hiking areas that are sure to please. And for those looking to stay awhile, Tennessee has a number of excellent RV parks scattered around the state.

For those who are not as interested in exploring the natural offerings of Tennessee, the urban offerings of the state are well worth visiting. Those interested in the music scene will find themselves surrounded by some of the best musicians in the country, and get to experience artists that are up and coming and yet incredible. Of course, those looking for delicious barbecue or just looking to wander through a city will find Memphis their ideal stopping point. No matter what brings you to this incredible state, you’re sure to find yourself falling in love with Tennessee.
