The Great Lakes State

The larger area of Michigan is the most notable, and earns this state one of its many nicknames as “The Mitten State.” Interestingly enough, these two peninsulas are separated by a five-mile channel.

Not only is Michigan home to the longest freshwater coastline in the United States, but it also has one of the longest freshwater coastlines of any political subdivision in the entire world. As if this wasn’t enough, this state has 64,980 inland lakes and ponds, earning its second nickname, “Water Wonderland.”
