Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway
Lava Butte, OR

Lava Butte formed somewhat gradually and volcanically around 7,000 years ago. Also, during the forming of the Butte, lava broke through the thinner, south side of the Butte and spread five miles to the north and the west.

The visitor center (see Lava Lands Visitor Center) stands near the Butte (at elevation 5,000 feet) and the Butte happens to be 500 feet higher than the visitor center.
