Special Considerations

Even though Forest Roads 19 and 46 are closed in the winter due to snow, the rest of the route is open during winter months and provides access to cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and winter-only cabin rentals at Fish Lake Remount Depot.

Restrictions

Forest Road 46 and Forest Road 19 are generally closed from approximately November 15 to April 30 due to snowfall.

Seasons

Best Time to Drive

Late spring through early fall for access to all segments of the byway. Post-Labor Day is quieter and less crowded. Late spring offers lush green forests and wildflowers.

High Season

Summer is the busiest season, but also the best season to visit high alpine areas adjacent to the byway and recreation lakes.
