Go hiking on the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway in Utah and find adventure at every turn. If you’re looking for a challenge, gear up to bag Nebo Summit—the highest peak in the Wasatch Mountains at 11,928 feet. For those less inclined toward treacherous footing and intense physical exertion, there are plenty of shorter, less rigorous hikes in the beautiful Uinta Forest near Mt. Nebo. Whatever your hiking prowess, bring lots of water, hiking boots and a camera, because you won’t want to miss any of the breathtaking scenery found along the byway’s many trails.
People may warn you to stay away from the Devil's Kitchen, but they probably haven’t been to the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway themselves. Be adventurous! If you’re looking for a short, easy hike, drive about 27 miles from the mouth of Payson Canyon along the byway, and you’ll see the clearly signed, easy-to-find Devil's Kitchen Trailhead. Once you’re there, follow the signs and the path south into the forest. The trail is only about a half-mile round-trip, but you'll see interesting, almost out of place pillars and other red rock formations along this quiet stroll. You will think you’ve stumbled upon a miniature of southern Utah’s Bryce Canyon. Don’t be fooled -- the red rock spires of Devil's Kitchen are actually perched on a mountainside and surrounded by the lush, aspen-filled Uinta Forest in the heart of Utah.
If you’re looking for a more strenuous hike and incredible views, gear up for the Mt. Nebo Bench Trail to the mountain's summit. To get there, head 24 miles south of Payson along the byway to the clearly signed Nebo Bench Trailhead. Although the trail is only nine miles round-trip, the 3800-foot gain in elevation makes it daunting for even experienced hikers. There is no water along the trail, so you’ll have to carry enough for the trip. You may find the hike more enjoyable if you pack in your tent and stay overnight on the trail. The trail starts off strong with a series of upward switchbacks heading through lush aspen forests and alpine meadows. Don’t be dismayed when you reach the steep and rocky ridge that leads to the summit. It is somewhat treacherous and many hikers turn back here. However, those who continue to the actual summit are rewarded with spectacular views of urban and rural Utah Valley and its surrounding peaks.
