St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, SC

St. Andrews Parish Church was created in 1706 under the Church Act by the Colonial South Carolina Assembly. This church became one of the administrative centers of the colonial government, serving as a place where proclamations and public notices were read and posted; vital statistics in the form of marriages, births, baptisms, deaths, and burials were recorded; poor relief was dispensed, and destitute orphans were apprenticed. The original building on this site was constructed between 1706 and 1708 with the addition of the transept and chancel in 1723. In 1764 the building burned and was reconstructed that same year. The building was vacant during the first half of the 20th century, but reopened in 1948 and has remained a vibrant, active church community ever since.
