The First State

While Delaware may be the second smallest of the United States, that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to explore in this beautiful state. Called “the First State” due to it being the first state to ratify the United States Constitution, this state deserves the first spot on your scenic drive road map.

Delaware takes its name from the River nearby that shares the same name, which was named after Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, who was Virginia’s first colonial governor. Before Delaware was colonized by Europeans, it was home 2 several Native American groups, including the Lenape, who were called “the Delaware” by European settlers, though this was not their name.

Delaware was originally colonized by Dutch traders, and on December 7th, 1787 became the first state to ratify the constitution of the United States. Delaware now has a blend of agricultural exports, as well as more urbanized developments in New Castle County. Interestingly enough, while Delaware is the 6th least populated state, it is also the 6th densest populated state, due to its small size.

Exploring Delaware By Road

While Delaware is a small state, there are plenty of beautiful drives to explore while you make your way across the state. There are three official scenic byways, but with miles of coastline, and beautiful, historic cities to explore, there are plenty of pathways to take off the beaten trail.

Whether you’re looking to explore the more agricultural areas of Delaware or want to make a trip into Wilmington, the most populated city in the state, you’re sure to find yourself captivated by the gorgeous views and scenery.

Due to the state’s shape, and its proximity to the ocean, Delaware offers a wide variety of climates within this small state. Interestingly enough, the record high temperature of 110°F (43°C) and the record low temperature of -17°F (-27°C) were both recorded at Millsboro, giving you a good idea of how much this state’s weather can vary.

With weather similar to Maryland, and a wide range of coastal forests, state parks, and coastline, this state is worth both a visit and a lifetime.
