Florida Keys Scenic Highway

Responding to citizen concerns, Clean Florida Keys, Inc. acted to save the Old Keys Railroad Bridges. Members served on the Governor's Old Keys Bridges Task Force that recommended maintaining the bridges for recreational use—fishing, running, walking and bicycling.

Clean Florida Keys, Inc. helped develop a partnership among Monroe County and the Florida Departments of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and Transportation (FDOT) to design and fund plans for the Overseas Heritage Trail.

Currently, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) is implementing a multi-use bike/ped facility adjacent to the FKSH, the Overseas Heritage Trail.The vision is that of a 100+ mile trail extending from Key West to Key Largo as an alternative transportation route and recreational greenway that encourages, hiking, running, bicycling, sight-seeing, fishing and kayaking. Trail development will include educational kiosks, picnic areas, scenic overlooks, fishing platforms, jogging paths, trailheads and water access. Approximately 45 miles is in place with the remainder under development.
