Centennial Baptist Church, AR

Dr. Elias Camp Morris, an African-American cleric who was instrumental in solidification of Negro Baptists as a separate entity, became pastor of Centennial Baptist Church in 1879, three years after the church was founded by members who left Helena's original black congregation. While traveling, Morris saw a church building that impressed him and described it to one of his congregation, architect Henry James Price, who designed Centennial Baptist based on Morris' description. The Gothic Revival structure, completed in 1905, is the only known example of an African-American church designed by an African-American architect in Arkansas.
