El Camino Real
El Camino Real Overview

The El Camino Real is an experience sure to leave an impression of the Southwest with you forever. The Royal Highway of the Interior Lands follows the Rio Grande River from the United States/Mexico border to Santa Fe. It traverses a land rich in history and culture.

The scenic beauty of the byway is as diverse and colorful as its culture, history, and people. From the low-lying flatlands of the south to the soaring peaks of the northern mountains, the terrain climbs 10,000 feet in altitude, creating a landscape of dramatic contrasts.

Notice that the El Camino Real and surrounding area is the postcard picture of desert beauty. Majestic mountain ranges with treacherous peaks wind through the desert, and low shrubs and cacti dot the earth. Be prepared with a camera and film as you experience this beautiful example of the Southwest.

Cities with a mesh of colorful cultures and scenery provide any type of entertainment a visitor could ask for: spicy food, upbeat music, unique architecture, impressive artwork, and a beautiful desert setting surround you as you enter into the cities, day or night.

Ancient cultures are preserved through traditions and appreciation, but many visitors go for the many exciting recreational opportunities. You will find infinite opportunities at every stop along the El Camino Real.
