Coronado Trail Scenic Byway
Casa Malpais Indian Ruins and Archaeological Park, AZ
The Casa Malpais Pueblo was built by the Ancient Puebloan people. At an elevation of 7,000 feet, the pueblo is perched on terraces in front of basalt cliffs formed by a lava flow from an ancient volcano.
Around 1240 A.D., the people began building a 60 room pueblo, a Great Kiva and a solar calendar. It is believed the site was abandoned sometime after 1350 A.D.
The pueblo overlooks the Little Colorado River and has a magnificent view of the White Mountains.
