Outer Banks Scenic Byway
Cape Lookout National Seashore, NC

Barrier islands from Ocracoke stretching 56 roadless miles to Beaufort are an International Biosphere Reserve.

Core Banks, ending with Cape Lookout and Shackleford Banks, encloses Core and Back Sounds. Now uninhabited, settlements around an extant life-saving station and lighthouse are unique as one of two shore whaling industry locations on North America’s east coast. This distinction is due to the cape’s proximity to the migratory paths of the right whales.
