Places to Visit

  • Kenai National Wildlife Refuge (AK)

    Established to protect moose, bears, and other native animals, this refuge invites visitors to see Alaska through the eyes of some of its earliest "natives."

  • Kenai Wilderness Area (AK)

    Located only 2 hours drive south of Alaska`s population center, Kenai NWR is the most heavily visited refuge in Alaska.

    Location on Byway: The Kenai Wilderness Area can be reached from the Sterling Highway which joins the Seward Highway by Moose Pass.

  • Overlooks and Scenic Stops (AK)

    Be sure to stop at all of the 15 overlooks on the Seward Highway.

    Location on Byway: All along the byway.

  • Portage Glacier (AK)

    Portage Glacier is an example of the dynamic forces of nature as it recedes from Portage Lake.

    Directions: Fifty miles south of Anchorage, off the Seward Highway, there`s a turnoff toward the Portage Glacier.

  • Potter Point (AK)

    This marsh is a state game refuge where wildlife viewing is abundant.

    Location on Byway: Milepost 117.8 on the Seward Highway

  • Ptarmigan Creek Recreation Site (AK)

    Each year from late July through early August, thousands of red salmon can be seen in this creek heading upstream to spawn.

    Location on Byway: Ptarmigan Creek is located just off the Seward Highway 23.1 miles from Seward.

  • Seward (AK)

    Seward is a historic community on the Kenai Peninsula. It has a historic downtown and provides access by boat to the Kenai Fjords National Park. A main attraction is the SeaLife Center.

    Directions: At the south end of the byway.

  • Sixmile Creek Viewpoint (AK)

    The Sixmile Creek Viewpoint provides scenic vistas of the Sixmile Creek valley and Turnagain Arm.

    Location on Byway: Sixmile Creek Viewpoint is located 56 miles from Seward at the junction of the Seward Highway and the Hope Highway.

  • Tern Lake Overlook (AK)

    Tern Lake Overlook provides excellent opportunities to observe waterfowl, terns, beavers, Mt. Goats, and Dall Sheep.

    Directions: Tern Lake Overlook is located less than a mile off the Seward Highway from a small pullout 37 miles from Seward.

  • Turnagain Arm (AK)

    This section of the Byway provides a sampling of Alaska marine and coastal life.

    Location on Byway: The overlooks at Turnagain Pass are located 69 miles from Seward outside of the Anchorage bowl.
