Seward Highway
Turnagain Pass, AK
The drive through Turnagain Pass may be one of the most scenic on this route. This is the route's highest point, and wildlife spotting occurs regularly here. Turnagain Pass is located in the south beyond Turnagain Arm. Two large pullouts are easily accessible from the only section of divided highway outside of the Anchorage bowl.
Views from the highway here show off the distinctive U-shape valley created by retreating glaciers. Northbound travelers are treated to spectacular views of Turnagain Arm and Twentymile glaciers as they head down from this 900 foot pass to sea level.
This area is especially popular in the winter for skiing and snowmobiling, and in mid-summer for its wildflower displays.
