The Top 5 Snowboard Helmets Reviewed

snowboard helmet reviewsIt’s no secret that you need all sorts of gear when you embark on snowboarding as a hobby. If you’re to stand any chance at success on the slopes, you will, of course, need a board. You should also consider things like goggles and the right outfit to keep you warm. Bar your board, though, your snowboard helmet has to be the most essential item of all.

Hitting the slopes without a decent helmet is asking for trouble, and it’s a mistake which no serious snowboarder should make. Let’s face it; this is an exhilarating sport for sure, but it doesn’t come without risks. Even the pros fall over from time to time, and the snowy mountain landscapes could crack your head like a watermelon without protection in place. That’d soon put an end to your snowboarding, and no one wants that!

Of course, you wouldn’t buy the first board which caught your eye, and you shouldn’t make that mistake with helmets either. Each design offers different protection for varying terrains and riding styles, and you need to be sure your helmet provides for your specific riding needs.

While we can’t tell you what helmet to get, we can make the choice a little easier by taking a look at the best options on the market.

For those of you in a hurry, our choice for the Best Snowboard Helmet is the Oakley Mod 5.

Best Snowboard Helmets

1. Oakley Mod 5

Oakley Mod 5 review

The Oakley Mod 5

We’re opening the floor straight off with the impressive Oakley Mod 5. While it is the most expensive option on our list, this stylish selection looks the part and has plenty of features to boost.

Unsurprisingly from a trusted brand like Oakley, this is a high-quality offering with plenty of features which avid snowboarders can enjoy. The main benefits of note include adjustable ventilation and a Boa 270 fit system which delivers an ideal fit. All the better for keeping you safe in case of an accident!

As you might expect, Oakley has designed this helmet to integrate seamlessly with their goggles, though the modular brim system ensures even non-Oakley goggles fit. The design is lightweight and comfortable and comes complete with ear pads which leave room for small earphones if you’re boarding in a group. This helmet is also relatively easy to keep clean with hand wash capabilities, and each offering comes with a helmet bag for protection between rides. Oakley themselves claim that the Mod 5 offers the perfect balance of protection and weight saving for technical riding. And, 78% of 5-star reviews seem to agree with them.

2. Smith Optics Holt

Smith Optics Holt review

The Smith Optics Holt

The Smith Optics Holt may look like a reasonably modest helmet, but its bombshell construction and proven fit very much set it apart. Available in fifteen funky colors and with a fun rounded design, this Smith Optics offering may well take you back to your skating days of boarding on concrete rather than snow. Still, there are plenty of additional features which make it ideal for your snowboarding needs. Namely, Smith Optics has thought about your every temperature need with their dual regulator ventilation system which independently controls the temperature in various sections of your helmet. At the same time, the AirEvac system will get to work making sure to generate airflow so that you never need to deal with fogged goggles again. All that helps this helmet hold onto its accolade of an ‘all-weather’ offering.

As if all those temperature benefits weren’t temptation enough, it’s possible to take your Holt helmet experience even further with a Skullcandy audio system which, while sold separately, is fully compatible. If you love getting lost in tunes while you’re out on the slope, then, this could be a good bet.

Add to that the lifetime manufacturer’s warranty and the fact that 76% of Amazon customers can’t get enough, and you could say that this helmet is worth your attention.

3. Demon United Phantom

Demon United Phantom review

The Demon United Phantom

Aside from looking pretty bad-ass, the Demon United Phantom helmet has CE and ASTM certification to guarantee your safety while you’re out on the slopes. When you also consider the Smooth ABS shell and the EPS foam padding, you could say this is the ideal option for achieving the comfort and protection you need at all times. And, that isn’t even the best thing about this Demon Phantom offering.

Unlike the Smith Optics Holt which can integrate with an audio system you have to buy separately, the Demon United Phantom comes complete with Brainteaser audio. As such, you simply need to connect your phone using the AUX cable so that you get lost in the music as you board. All for one fixed price which, incidentally, is a fair amount cheaper than the Smith Optics Holt in the first place.

And, audio isn’t the only extra you can expect when you invest in this helmet. Each purchase also includes Supra goggles, an adjustable strap bag, and a protective case. We say that makes this a pretty fantastic bargain which, if the positive reviews are anything to go by, you certainly won’t regret in a hurry. In fact, the only possible negative you could aim at this release is the fact that the colors are limited to six options. But, you can’t have it all, and the basic block colors are still there to suit the majority of needs.

4. Retrospec Traverse H1

Retrospec Traverse H1 review

The Retrospec Traverse H1

Color certainly isn’t an issue with the Retrospec Traverse H1, which comes in an astounding sixteen color combos. There are even two real-wood finishes which could help you blend right in with your natural surroundings. Color coordination aside, this offering can also see you enjoying benefits like the ErgoKnob adjustable dial for finding the perfect fit out of the three different sizes. This helmet also enjoys ten vents for temperature control both inside and outside, making for decent airflow at all times.

Safety is, of course, another pressing priority and Retrospec has you covered there too, with each of their helmets subject to rigorous safety testing (CE EN 1077:2007 / CPSC 16 CFR, Part 1203). This is evident in their H1 design, which comes complete with a certified firm ABS shell and shock-absorbent EPS foam interiors. Those same shock interiors are also interchangeable to ensure that you can get the protection you need every time you head out. That’s not the only customizable feature in this helmet either, with removable plush earmuffs also ensuring you can use this even when you aren’t living it large on the slopes.

Bear in mind that some customers have reviewed this helmet as looking appearing rather large during use, so it may be best steering clear if think that would bother you. In general, though, the Retrospec Traverse H1 definitely deserves its place.

5. Anon Raider

Anon Raider review

The Anon Raider

Last but not least we’ve got the Anon Raider, which has the potential to be the cheapest helmet on this list if you buy from the right place and pick the cheapest colors. That’s not to say you need to compromise on quality here, because it’s fair to say that the Anon Raider is a favorite for many boarders and with good reason. With its skate-inspired design, this may well put you in mind of a slightly sleeker version of the Smith Optics Holt from an appearance point of view. As you may be able to guess, though, the Anon Raider has some plus points of its own.

The robust Endura-Shell ABS construction of this helmet is available in fourteen colors, ensuring that there really is something for everyone. Looks aside, the construction is durable and should last you through a good few riding seasons. That’s certainly not bad for a helmet with such low price points. As with many of the offerings on this list, the incorporated passive ventilation on this design goes a long way towards controlling temperatures and also reducing the risks of goggle fog as you ride. The ability to remove the fleece liner and earpads also adds another chance to control your temperature until it suits, as well as ensuring you can adjust the fit of your helmet to account for beanies, etc.

Again like the Smith Optics Holt, the Anon Raider is also compatible with separately sold Skullcandy audio, though the lower upfront cost of this helmet may make this a slightly more appealing option for many. In fact, issues with the removable goggle clip seem to be the only downside many customers can find about this affordable offering. If you want to get going without breaking the bank, then, it seems you can’t go far wrong with Anon.

  • Removable ear pads and liner make it easy to comfortably wear a beanie or goggle straps underneath the helmet while maintaining a low-profile look
  • Skate-inspired design for year-round on and off-snow use
  • Audio accessory compatible ear pads fit most aftermarket audio systems

Whatever your snowboarding needs, it’s fair to say that there’s sure to be a helmet out there which meets them. Whether you want a funky design, audio capabilities, or temperature control, it’s possible to find it. As you can see from this list, you needn’t even spend a fortune on this piece of kit. Really, then, there’s no excuse for you not to invest in a decent snowboarding helmet!
