A Traveler's Experience

The weather was nearly perfect during my visit to the Savannah River Scenic Byway, and the drive was green and lovely. The trees along the road were so thick that I could't see through them to see what's on the other side! The Byway travels right near J. Strom Thurmond Lake, and every now and then you can see a bit of the water from the road. There were many accesses to get to the water, including a bunch of recreation areas. The lake was crystal clear. The chilly breeze that would blow by occasionally was keeping too many people from enjoying the day on the lake, but a few people were out enjoying the spring sunshine, including me!
The best way to really enjoy the Byway would be to bring an RV or tent and camp in one of the National Forests, and to spend a day or two fishing, swimming, or boating on the lake. With my limited time, I only had the opportunity to drive the Byway from beginning to end, with a few stops to enjoy the views from overlooks and stop at the visitor center, but the drive was beautiful.
What Others Have Said
