A Traveler's Experience
aby on November 7, 2003 (traveled on November 25, 2002)Outback Scenic Byway (OR)
It was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. There was complete silence along the route, only the sound of tires.
I and my wife stayed at Summer Lake a few miles from Fort Rock . It is a very comfortable log cabin accommodation, the Summer Lake Inn. We got to hear the coyotes at night and watch the stars at night. Next day we went to Abert Rim and saw migratory birds there and then went on to Gemstone Valley. From there we took a dirt road drive to Paisley.
I must say if you're seeking a completely true adventure then take the route from La Pine to Lake View via Summer Lake.
What Others Have Said
eds1 on March 25, 2006 (traveled on March 25, 2006)I drove out to Fort Rock State Park on the Outback Scenic Byway in Oregon and saw prairie falcons nesting on the cliff-face, ravens soaring overhead, and a Say's phoebe and mountain bluebirds catching insects in sagebrush. Snow was falling at the time and nobody else was around.
