Approximately 10+ miles of this roadway is currently under construction. The last 5 miles up and then the first 5 miles down (the entire summit) is loosely packed gravel. You have a pilot truck leading one line up and one line down at a time. Wait time can be up to 30 minutes. Motorcycles, use extreme caution! You are on your own in bi-directional traffic on the Cooke City side.
Still beautiful though.. Very cold for August.. Still ice on the ridges.

Last summer we camped for five days at one of the gorgeous National Forest campgrounds south of Red Lodge and drove up the switchbacks nearly every day to hike and hang out above treeline. Gorgeous!
