A Traveler's Experience
jerrysegraves on August 10, 2007Wetlands and Wildlife Scenic Byway (KS)
With frequent travels along the Wetlands and Wildlife Scenic Byway, I'm in a great position to photograph much of the wetlands area. With this spring and summers rains, a lot of Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira NWRs roads have been closed due to high water and flooding. However, this has lead to even more shorebirds and other summer resident birds and other animals extending their range from in and along the edges of the marshes to new "wetlands" formed in sand prairie pastures and any low depressions that will hold water. So, the high water and wet weather that has been a bit of a curse for the refuges has been a real boon for the surrounding countryside that the byway passes through as well as helping to restore groundwater levels for the entire region.
