June 24, 2009 - Attention Adrenaline Junkies: Big Sur Coast Highway Declared one of America’s Scariest Drives

In March 2009, forbestraveler.com declared Big Sur Coast Highway as one of America’s Scariest Drives. Experience this “highway from hell” along the coast of northern California. Built in the 1920s, the two-lane portion snakes along precipitous cliffs, through deep ravines and across 33 bridges that often hang hundreds of feet in the air. If the twisty roadway isn’t enough of a challenge, try keeping your eyes on the road despite distracting views while constantly being on the lookout for motorists slowing down or stopping completely in the road to admire the scenery. Combined with the constant threat of rocks and mudslides, Big Sur is truly an “adrenaline drive.”
