April 29, 2008 - Seeking Public Input Regarding Ashley River Road's Middleton Oak

Measuring seven feet in diameter, a limb of the Middleton Oak at Middleton Place on the Ashley River Road in South Carolina recently broke off from the ancient tree.

Pat Kennedy, vice president of marketing for Middleton Place, is seeking public input on the fate of the branch, which could be used for sculptures, picture frames, or even violins.

Kennedy said Middleton is interested in hearing the public’s ideas quickly. The future use of the wood will affect the way the limb is removed from the site - a job that could begin in a week or two.

A cross section, or “cookie” will be given to scientists interested in ascertaining the tree’s true age, as well as gather information about weather conditions and climate trends from the tree’s extensive history.
