December 20, 2007 - Ouachita National Forest Celebrated 100 Years in December

HOT SPRINGS—The Ouachita National Forest will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Forest on December 18th with “meet and greet” celebrations at district offices throughout Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma. The public is invited to celebrate with cake and coffee at any of the Ranger District offices listed below from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. A proclamation by President Roosevelt on December 18, 1907, created the Arkansas National Forest on reserved public domain lands south of the Arkansas River. On April 29, 1926, President Calvin Coolidge renamed the forest Ouachita for the mountains which it embraces and for the principal river which drains it. President Herbert Hoover extended the Ouachita National Forest into Oklahoma in 1930.

Arkansas Congressman Mike Ross, along with Congressman John Boozman, Congressman Marion Berry and Congressman Vic Snyder, introduced House Resolution 390 on June 5, 2007, which recognized the “important contributions of the Forest to the success of the United States in conserving the environment and ensuring that our natural resources remain sources of pride for our citizens, our communities and our Nation.”

“We invite and encourage everyone to join us in celebrating this historic anniversary,” said Ouachita Forest Supervisor Norman Wagoner. “It’ll be a great time to reflect together on where we’ve been and look toward the next 100 years.”
