Discover the 2003 fall foliage season on the “roads less traveled”

Washington, D.C. - It’s that time of year again, when nature’s fall palette calls to the artist in all of us with millions of Americans taking to the nation’s roadways to catch the show of colors. Many drivers take major interstates and highways - often crowded with bumper-to-bumper traffic - to their destination when they should be opting for the greatest show of all - America’s scenic byways.

“America’s Byways™ are special destinations, possessing unique intrinsic qualities that makes each road special,” said Phil Noblitt, Blue Ridge Parkway Spokesperson. “While every Byway is an adventure worth exploring, many offer a spectacular fall show that should not be missed.”

When planning your weekend getaways this fall, enjoy the drive with America’s Byways™. Routes that are known especially for their natural beauty during the fall season include the following:

  • Kancamagus Highway meanders through some of the most beautiful coniferous forests in New Hampshire, which yield a stunning array of colors in the fall. Many believe this route to be one of the top fall foliage trips in the world. Try to go on a weekday to avoid possible crowding.
  • Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic drive that travelers go out of their way to experience. Extending through the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, many visitors come to this Byway primarily for the burst of red, yellow, and orange color that reveals the true personality of this deeply romantic part of the nation.
  • Loess Hills Scenic Byway’s unique land features make a beautiful backdrop to the forests and prairies of Western Iowa. As it sits along the Missouri River, travelers can experience spectacular fall foliage in the heart of the Midwest.
