America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Coulee Corridor Scenic Byway
(Washington)
In ancient times Ice Age Floods tore through the land and left behind dry, rocky canyons in the heart of Washington. Today visitors can witness these beautiful coulees firsthand by taking a trip along Coulee Corridor Scenic Byway. However, Coulee Corridor is home to much more than canyons and erratic rocks. Located near the byway are Columbia and Saddle Mountain National Wildlife Refuges. More than 100,000 ducks and Canada geese winter in Columbia. Visitors will also find various water, marsh, song and shorebirds, as well as hawks and owls. At Saddle Mountain the wildlife includes endangered salmon and trout. Birds, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates complete this fragile wildlife ecosystem.
