America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Western Heritage Historic Byway
(Idaho)
Billions of years of geological history and thousands of years of civilization can be found on the Western Heritage Historic Byway. Capacious expanses of open space, canyons, and unbelievable rock formations are just a start to the raw beauty of the byway. The byway is known for its soaring birds of prey. As you travel the byway you will pass through Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area which is home to many raptors, owls, hawks, falcons and eagles. Located nine miles from the byway, Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge houses heron rookeries and gull colonies. More than 100,000 people visit the refuge each year to fish, hunt, photograph and view wildlife. Take the opportunity to join them, and while you're there, check out the refuge visitor center or take a walk along the nature trail.
