America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
International Selkirk Loop (Idaho and Washington)

An international byway that encircles the Selkirk Mountains in northeastern Washington, north Idaho and southeast British Columbia, the International Selkirk Loop impresses and amazes visitors with its forested hillsides, charming towns and snowcapped peaks. As you travel along the byway you will bump into Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge which is comprised of many different habitats. Find meadows, wetlands, riparian forests and cultivated agricultural fields adjacent to the west banks of the Kootenai River. The byway is also home to the Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge extends along the western slope of the mountain range and is the only mountainous, mixed-conifer forest refuge in the contiguous United States. Established in 1939, the refuge was recognized as a breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife.
