America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Creole Nature Trail (Louisiana)

Known as Louisiana's Outback, the Creole Nature Trail meanders through marshes, prairies, and along the Gulf of Mexico. The byway goes through and along three out of the four refuges in Louisiana, and those refuges are part of a network of more than 540 refuges throughout the U.S. states and its territories. Drive through the Sabine Wildlife Refuge, considered one of the top 20 birding spots in North America, with its 125,000 acres of protected marshland. The 35,0000 acres of the Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge is a little farther from the byway, but it's worth visiting to see its dominating feature, the Lacassine Pool which is home to abundant species of waterfowl. At the end of the byway is a chance to drive through the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge, 9,621 acres of fresh-water marsh and coastal prairie. This is a great spot to see migratory birds as the refuge is located at the convergence of two major flyways.
