America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Merritt Parkway
(Connecticut)
Merritt Parkway features a design that brilliantly combines engineering and art, particularly in its Art Deco or Art Moderne bridges. The byway, which is set in natural surroundings, showcases magnificent foliage in spring and fall months. About five miles south of the byway, Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge helps various wildlife species find a safe haven. Though its acreage is small by other refuge standards, the lands on this refuge are diverse; habitats are forested, marshy, sandy, and secluded island. Bird populations range from roseate terns to American black ducks, and the refuge successfully provides them with their very different needs for food, water, shelter, and space.
