America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Natchez Trace Parkway (Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee)

Though the area surrounding Natchez Trace Parkway is historically significant, it is also known for beautiful wildlife refuge areas. St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge, located 13 miles south of Natchez, offers a myriad of ecological niches for wildlife. Travel through Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and watch out for American alligator, whitetail deer, swamp rabbits and hundreds of migratory songbirds. Listen for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker in Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, located near the Tombigbee National Forest just off the byway. Take a side trip to the Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge Complex, the largest refuge complex in the state of Mississippi; visit the youngest and the oldest refuges in the state as you explore the 100,000 acres of refuge land.
