Drive the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway and see for yourself the valley's rich American Indian culture and history as well two National Wildlife Refuges that illustrate the region's commitment to good land stewardship. Visit Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge, located near the byway, a prairie area that houses migratory and native birds, deer, otter, and even bison. It is the only place in Minnesota where native ball cactus exist. Located 10 miles east of Belle Plaine, Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, is a complex of oak savannas and marshland areas that provides excellent opportunities for watching migratory birds and other wildlife.
