America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Outback Scenic Byway
(Oregon)
Outback Scenic Byway sits within a naturally rugged landscape. Though the land itself is lush and beautiful, the wildlife within it is equally fascinating. Located 30 miles east of Valley Falls, Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge spans 275,000 acres. Originally established to provide protected ranges for antelope herds, the refuge now preserves all other wildlife species native to the area, making it a delightful place to watch for wildlife. Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, which sits 30 miles southwest of Fort Rock, is a great place to go birding. Here, you'll see a plethora of waterfowl, as well as sandhill cranes, yellow rail, raptores, and shorebirds.
