America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Flint Hills Scenic Byway
(Kansas)
Home to one of the world's largest stretches of tallgrass prairie, the Flint Hills Scenic Byway offers an unchanged view of the grasslands of the Great Plains. Explore historic sites, quaint towns, and scenic vistas as you discover where the West truly begins. Drive east of the byway to visit Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge, a designated "Internationally Important Bird Area" that provides a safe habitat for migratory birds and resident wildlife. Bird watching and wildlife watching are two of the refuge's primary activities. Keep your eyes open for bobcats, white-tailed deer, mallards, blue-winged teal, Canada geese, snow geese, red-tailed hawks, shorebirds, bald eagles, wild turkey, bobwhite quail, and many species of warblers.
