America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway
(North Dakota)
In a state known for its flat horizons, a dip into a tree-speckled valley with snaking river and winding roadway is an unexpectedly welcome variation. Discover Native American, Viking, and pioneer lore. Watch stately swans and geese migrate during the spring and fall at the Tomahawk, Hobart Lake, and Stoney Slough National Wildlife Refuges, each only two to five miles from the byway. These refuges provide excellent observation and photographing opportunities for birders, especially ones interested in the Tundra Swan, the Snow Goose, or the White Fronted Goose. Lucky birders may also find these and other species nesting and brooding in some portions of the refuge.
