America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Connecticut River Byway - New Hampshire (New Hampshire)

Connecticut River Byway pays homage to New England's longest, most powerful river and its influence on colonial settlement. The byway and its communities boast deep-rooted traditions and vivid history, as well as natural beauty and recreation. Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, which covers both Vermont and New Hampshire, conserves, protects, and enhances the wildlife species and their ecosystems in the Connecticut River watershed. Located about 25 miles east of the byway in New Hampshire, Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge protects over 20,500 acres of wetland and forested uplands, offering superior breeding and foraging areas for migratory birds, endangered species, local wildlife, and rare plants.
