America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike
(West Virginia)
Once crucial in the First Campaign of the Civil War, Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike has preserved much of the natural beauty of the West Virginia area. Located on the byway, the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge preserves the wetlands and uplands of the high elevation of this area, which spans more than 16,000 acres. Observe wildlife in their natural habitat, such as deer, raccoon, geese and squirrel, but keep a sharp eye out for mink, bobcat and barred owls.
