• Alaska's Marine Highway (Alaska)

  Experience Alaska's Marine Highway by ferry along over 3,500 miles of scenic coastal routes. Explore the 33 communities served by the byway, each with a different flavor of Alaskan indigenous and modern culture, fascinating history and great scenery. See whales, glaciers, rare birds, and sea lions from the deck.

• Ancient Bristlecone Scenic Byway (Route 168) (California)

  This U.S. Forest Service Scenic Byway and State Scenic Highway climbs through pinyon-juniper woodlands.

• Andrew Pickens Scenic Parkway (South Carolina)

  Named for Revolutionary War General Andrew Pickens, the Andrew Pickens Scenic Byway lies near the site of Pickens' last battle against the Cherokee Indians, commonly known as the Ring Fight. Outnumbered more than seven to one, Pickens and his men managed to defeat the Indians. Pickens built his final home, the Red House, about a mile away from the site of the battle. In later years, the Indians came to revere Pickens, calling him Skyagusta, or "wizard owl."

• Angeles Crest Scenic Byway (Route 2) (California)

  This U.S. Forest Service Scenic Byway and State Scenic Highway winds along the spine of the San Gabriel Mountains. It provides views of mountain peaks, the Mojave Desert and the Los Angeles Basin.

• Apache Trail Historic Road (Arizona)

  The Apache Trail Historic Road was used by Salado Indians as a migration route. The route follows the Salt River and is near the Roosevelt Dam and Superstition Wilderness area.

• Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway (Florida)

  The Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway traverses the western end of the Apalachicola National Forest. Visitors will find uncommon plants, wild scenery, and outdoor adventure in canoeing, fishing and hunting.

• Arkansas Scenic 7 Byway (Arkansas)

  Named by many as one of the 10 most beautiful drives in the US, the Scenic 7 contains unsurpassed and dramatic views of the Ozarks and Ouachita Mountains. It runs north to south through central Arkansas.

• Avenue of Pines - TH 46, Deer River to Northome (Minnesota)

  The Avenue of Pines Byway cuts right through the heart of Chippewa National Forest, and borders the large Lake Winnibigoshish, revered by Minnesota anglers for walleye, northern pike and most other game fish.

• Beartooth Highway (Montana, Wyoming)

  Providing visitors access to Yellowstone Park's northeast entrance, the Beartooth Highway makes its way across the rugged Beartooth Mountain Range in Montana and Wyoming. The road is the highest elevation highway in the Northern Rockies and provides dramatic views, unlimited outdoor recreation opportunities, and unparalleled wildlife watching.

• Beaver Canyon Scenic Byway (U-153) (Utah)

  Several recreational facilities are available along this route. The Tushar Mountain Range provides year-round recreation, and Elk Mountain Ski and Summer Resort offers skiing in the winter and golf in the summer. Beaver Canyon is a fall color favorite.

• Big Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway (Utah)

  Big Cottonwood Canyon takes visitors through dramatic rock formations and past lush wetland meadows, through the alpine scenery of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest and alongside the rushing waters of Big Cottonwood Creek. Tall mountain slopes beckon to hikers and skiers, inviting them to experience terrain that is majestic in any season.

• Bigfoot Scenic Byway (California)

  Follow the path of the legendary Sasquatch where more sightings have been reported than anywhere else on earth. If your search for Bigfoot proves fruitless, you'll find plenty more to keep you entertained.

• Bighorn Scenic Byway (Wyoming)

  One of three byways that cross the Bighorn National Forest, this byway offers a variety of views: from Shell Canyon and the breathtaking Shell Falls, to the gorgeous mountain peaks and limestone outcroppings of the Big Horn Mountains.

• Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway (Virginia)

  An alternative to six miles of Interstate 77 and the Big Walker Interstate tunnel, the Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway traverses 16.2 miles of State Highway 717 and US 52/21 in the Jefferson National Forest.

• Black River Scenic Byway (Michigan)

  Black River Harbor, one of only two harbors within the National Forest System, is a popular recreation area throughout the year. The harbor is approximately 15 miles north of Bessemer, Michigan, at the mouth of the Black River. The Black River flows through areas of large pine, hemlock, and hardwood trees and has a series of scenic waterfalls as it drops to meet Lake Superior. On September 19, 1992, Highway 513, which follows this section of the Black River, was officially dedicated as a National Forest Scenic Byway in recognition of its exceptional beauty and recreational opportunities.

• Blue Buck Knob Scenic Byway (Missouri)

  The Blue Buck Knob Scenic Byway travels through Missouri's Ozark hill country within the Mark Twain National Forest. It twists and turns through farmland, open pastures, and densely wooded hillsides.

• Blue Mountain Scenic Byway (Oregon)

  Apart from remarkable scenery, this byway is known for its diversity: charming towns, a majestic national forest, rocky peaks, and wild rivers.

• Blue Ridge Parkway (Virginia, North Carolina)

  The Parkway provides spectacular mountain and valley vistas, quiet pastoral scenes, sparkling waterfalls and colorful flower and foliage displays as it extends through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina.

• Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway (Wyoming)

  U.S. Highway 14-16-20, the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway, follows the North Fork of the Shoshone River through the Wapiti Valley to the East Entrance of Yellowstone. It is known for its abundant wildlife, astonishing rock formations, and recreation.

• Cache La Poudre-North Park Scenic and Historic Byway (Colorado)

  This route has seen its share of traffic. Native Americans used this river canyon as a transit corridor, and trappers, miners and loggers passed through in the 1800s.

• Carson Pass Highway (Route 88) (California)

  Carson Pass Highway is considered by many to be the most beautiful and visually dramatic of the several trans-Sierra highways in California.

• Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway (Oregon)

  This byway cuts a path through the mountains, lakes and forests of central Oregon. Volcanism and glaciation formed more than 150 lakes for which the region is well known. See outstanding examples of lava flows, alpine lakes and meadows. Cross paths taken by such historic figures as Kit Carson.

• Cedar Breaks Scenic Byway (U-148) (Utah)

  Although only 6 miles long, this route is filled with color, from the flowered meadows of the Dixie National Forest to the multi-colored rock amphitheatres of Cedar Breaks National Monument.

• Cherohala Skyway (Tennessee, North Carolina)

  The Skyway offers the cultural heritage of the Cherokee tribe and early settlers in a grand forest environment in the Appalachian Mountains. Enjoy mile-high vistas and brilliant fall foliage, as well as great hiking opportunities and picnic spots in magnificent and seldom seen portions of the southern Appalachian National Forests.

• Cloud Peak Skyway (Wyoming)

  This byway includes US 16 between Ten Sleep and Buffalo, through the Big Horn National Forest. It is a popular route to Yellowstone National Park, the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore.

• Coronado Trail Scenic Byway (Arizona)

  Drive through high desert and forests, and see former Native American footpaths first used as horse paths by Conquistadors and prospectors, then as wagon trails for pioneers. While admiring the scenic beauty, imagine nomadic tribes of hunters, gatherers, trappers, outlaws, homesteaders, lumberjacks and ranchers living along the byway.

• Covered Bridge Scenic Byway (Ohio)

  Winding through the forested hillsides of the Little Muskingum River valley, this byway includes four historic covered bridges, as well as quaint churches, general stores and villages, and the Graysville Jail.

• Edge of the Wilderness (Minnesota)

  Travel this spectacular, winding byway by many pristine lakes, forests, swamps, rolling hills, and other unique features. Outdoor recreation, interpretive sites, and other exciting opportunities await the traveler. During fall, the northwoods is adorned with the brilliant colors of red sugar maples, bronze oak trees and glowing gold aspen and birch.

• Elkhorn Scenic Byway (Oregon)

  This 106-mile loop takes you through the Elkhorn Mountains, gold-mining ghost-towns, and along elegant lakes and rivers. You can learn a lot of history here, and also hunt, fish, camp, boat, ski, and hike.

• Emigrant Trail (California, Oregon)

  This byway connects important Oregon and California routes by way of Modoc National Forest roads. This route is also culturally significant, as it is full of Native American and Euro-American history.

• Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway (New Mexico)

  Take off from Taos, and enjoy the Alpine meadows, scenic vistas and breathtaking views of the northern New Mexico Mountains.

• The Energy Loop: Huntington/Eccles Canyons Scenic Byway (Utah)

  The Energy Loop: Huntington/Eccles Canyons Scenic Byway winds across the Manti-La Sal National Forest, rising up to 10,000 feet above sea level. Explore the rich history of industrial development as you view coal mining operations, historic mining towns, and coal-fired power plants. Nearby Sanpete Valley contains some of the best-preserved Mormon Pioneer settlements in existence.

• Feather River Scenic Byway (California)

  Climbing over the Sierra's crest and through Beckwourth Pass to the east, the Feather River Byway offers memorable sights such as waterfalls, gigantic rock outcroppings, forested slopes, and delicate meadows.

• Fishlake Scenic Byway (U-25) (Utah)

  Providing access to two of the most scenic fishing spots in Utah, this highway will take you through beautiful mountain meadows with a variety of vegetation and wildlife in the Fishlake National Forest.

• Flaming Gorge-Uintas National Scenic Byway (Utah)

  The byway meanders over the eastern flank of the Uinta Mountains and through the Ashley National Forest and Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. View wildlife in their native habitats and experience the "real West" as passed down through western folklore of early explorers, homesteaders, mountainmen, outlaws and cowboys.

• Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway (Colorado)

• From the Desert to Tall Pines Scenic Road (Arizona)

  This scenic road near the middle of Arizona, SR-288, straddles the Tonto and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in central Arizona, running north-south through the Sierra Ancha mountains from the junction with SR 260 to SR 188.

• Glade Top Trail (Missouri)

  Stretching 23 miles over Missouri's Ozark hill country, the Glade Top Trail weaves along narrow ridge tops above a broken and rolling countryside.

• Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway (Colorado)

  This "playground in the sky" climbs from the rugged Plateau Canyon floor to the cool evergreen mesa forests, 11,000 feet up. Featured are hundreds of sparkling lakes, wildflower meadows and forests of shimmering aspen and pine. Take a side trip to Lands End Overlook where the Grand Valley unfolds below.

• Great Divide Highway (Wisconsin)

  This byway takes State Route 77 through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

• Guanella Pass Road (Colorado)

  The route is a crash course in Rocky Mountain ecosystems, leaping the steep divide between the South Platte and Clear Creek watersheds.

• Hells Canyon Scenic Byway (Oregon)

  Journey from river's edge to mountain-top and down to valley floor. Savor panoramic views of rugged basalt cliffs and fertile fields, rimmed by snow-tipped peaks. Tour foundries, galleries and museums. Touch the weathered track of the historic Oregon Trail. Watch the majestic Snake River tumble through North America's deepest canyon.

• Heritage Drive (Wisconsin)

  Heritage Drive runs through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, comprised of a mix of hardwood trees, giant hemlocks, and pines.

• Highland Scenic Highway (West Virginia)

  Travel through a wild and undeveloped portion of the Monongahela National Forest. Hardwood forests cover rolling, mountainous terrain capped by dark spruce at high elevations. Traverse a narrow and steep-walled valley with views of clear mountain streams. Sights include Cranberry Glades Botanical Area, Summit Lake and Falls of Hills Creek.

• Highlands Scenic Byway (Virginia)

  This National Forest Scenic Byway weaves through a landscape of diverse vegetation, scenic views, unique geological formations and an abundance of wildlife. In addition, there are numerous historic places-the remnants of a once thriving mining community.

• Kaibab Plateau-North Rim Parkway (Arizona)

  Travel through the Kaibab Plateau’s meadows and forests of dense ponderosa pine and mixed conifer to the brink of the spectacular north rim of the Grand Canyon, 1,000 feet higher than the south rim. Watch for the abundant wildlife and experience breathtaking views of the canyon.

• Kancamagus Scenic Byway (New Hampshire)

  The Kancamagus Scenic Byway passes through the heart of the White Mountains while traversing the flank of Mt. Kancamagus, filled with scenic areas and overlooks. Visit the Russell Colbath Historic Site, which offers colonial history, and explore the Forest Discovery Trail, which provides forest ecology experiences in a living classroom.

• Kings Canyon Scenic Byway (California)

  The King's Canyon Scenic Byway in the Sequoia National Forest showcases California's famous redwoods and beautiful geology.

• Kings Hill Scenic Byway (Montana)

  Winding through the vibrant country of central Montana, Kings Hill Scenic Byway offers many activities including fishing, hiking, boating, and skiing.

• Lady Slipper Scenic Byway (Minnesota)

  The Lady Slipper Scenic Byway runs through the same forests and lakes where the Ojibwe tribe of Native Americans lived at the head of the Mississippi River.

• Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway (Montana)

  Highlighting the southern half of Lake Koocanusa, the Byway connects the towns of Libby and Eureka along U.S. 37.

• Lamoille Canyon Road (Nevada)

  The Ruby Mountains are Nevada's wettest, and therefore most verdant mountain range. Follow this winding road around the base of 11,249-foot Ruby Dome, up glacially-formed Lamoille Canyon.

• Lassen Scenic Byway (California)

  Winding through both Lassen National Forest and Lassen Volcanic National Park, this 185-mile loop is one of the most scenic drives in California.

• Lee Vining Canyon Scenic Byway (California)

  Flanked by the Ansel Adams and Hoover Wilderness Areas and Yosemite National Park, Lee Vining Canyon Scenic Byway takes you through glacier and volcano-created scenery; a dichotomous conflict between two primal elements.

• Little Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway (Utah)

  Beginning at the eastern border of the Salt Lake Valley, Little Cottonwood Canyon exposes the glory of the Wasatch Mountains, a recreational and scenic getaway draped in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest and crowned with views of peaks which rise to nearly 12,000 feet.

• Logan Canyon Scenic Byway (Utah)

  From Logan to Garden City, this byway parallels the Logan River though Logan Canyon, passing through dense forests, lush meadows, rugged rock formations and panoramic views. Each season brings a colorful show, especially in autumn.

• Longhouse Scenic Byway (Pennsylvania)

  Longhouse Scenic Byway is a loop that runs through Allegheny National Forest. It is surrounded by various kinds of foliage, from Black Cherry trees to Red Pines, and has several campsites and picnic sights to stop at along the way.

• Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway (Louisiana)

  Recognized as one of the most scenic drives in Louisiana, many vistas along the 17-mile drive offer views of mesas, buttes, and sandstone outcroppings.

• Markaguant High Plateau Scenic Byway (U-14) (Utah)

  Climbing steeply through narrow Cedar Canyon and into the Dixie National Forest, the route is ablaze with color in the fall, the mountainsides covered with red maples and golden oaks.

• McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway (Oregon)

  Experience dramatic views of the snowcapped High Cascade Peaks. The panorama of lava fields and six Cascade peaks is made more striking by the contrast between the black lava and white snow. The mountains are mirrored in crystal-clear lakes, and the byway passes beautiful waterfalls, including Sahalie and Koosah Falls.

• Medicine Wheel Passage (Wyoming)

  U.S. Highway 14A travels up to Medicine Mountain and the Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark. Medicine Wheel Passage offers spectacular mountain views as well as a glimpse into Native American history.

• Mesa Falls Scenic Byway (Idaho)

  The Mesa Falls Scenic Byway offers travelers a scenic drive along the Falls River and past Upper and Lower Mesa Falls.

• Mirror Lake Scenic Byway - UT Section (Utah)

  Heading east from Kamas through the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, the Mirror Lake Highway is one of the most popular mountain routes in the state.

• Modoc Volcanic Scenic Byway (California)

  Known as the "land of rocks that float and mountains of glass," this byway takes the traveller on a journey through geological and historical sights that defy description.

• Mountain Loop Scenic Byway (Washington)

  The Mountain Loop Scenic Byway loops through the Mt. Baker- Snoqualmie National Forest and provides access to three wilderness areas and hundreds of miles of hiking trails.

• Mountain Waters Scenic Byway (North Carolina)

  Along the winding mountain roads of North Carolina is a beautiful stretch of scenic byway that leads through hardwood forests, river gorges, and rural countryside.

• Mount Baker Highway (Route 542) (Washington)

  Mount Baker Highway is the only access to the magnificent Mount Baker. The byway offers a range of stunning sights and adventure for any visitor.

• Mount Evans Scenic Byway (Colorado)

  This is the highest paved road in North America, climbing more than 7,000 feet in just 28 miles and finally reaching an altitude of 14,270 feet. The Front Range sprawls below along with 100 miles of Rocky Mountain peaks.

• Mount Magazine Scenic Byway (Arkansas)

  Located in the north/central portion of the state, the Mt. Magazine Scenic Byway includes a 20.4 mile segment of Arkansas State Highway 309 from the Magazine District forest boundary south of Paris to just north of Havana.

• Mount Rogers Scenic Byway (Virginia)

  Mt. Rogers Scenic Byway treats you to incredible visual experience as it laces back and forth over whitewater streams and passes the southwest slopes of Whitetop Mountain.

• Natchez Trace Parkway - Mississippi (Mississippi)

  Filled with sites sharing history with both the early Chickasaw inhabitants and the later Civil War, each mile along this historic route is well worth the drive. History and outdoor adventure await you along the Natchez Trace through the striking expanses of the Homochitto and Tombigbee National Forests in Mississippi.

• Nebo Loop Scenic Byway (Utah)

  From Nephi to Payson, this route has breathtaking views of the Wasatch Range and 11,877-foot Mt. Nebo, its tallest mountain. See flat bottomlands, high-alpine conifers, red rock formations, gray sandstone cliffs and salt flats all in the same day. Sights include Devil's Kitchen, Walker Flat and Mt. Nebo Wilderness.

• North Cascades Scenic Highway (Washington)

  The eastern edge of the North Cascades Highway begins in the remote high desert of the Methow Valley and rises gently as it approaches Washington Pass and the snow-capped peaks of the North Cascade Mountains.

• North Shore Scenic Drive (Minnesota)

  This byway follows the majestic shoreline of Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake. Experience some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. The drive provides access to eight state parks and the Superior National Forest and offers unlimited opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in all seasons.

• Ocoee Scenic Byway (Tennessee)

  Ocoee Scenic Byway, the first National Forest Byway, winds through the Cherokee National Forest, passing Parksville Lake, the Ocoee River Gorge and rising to magnificent views of the Tennessee Valley, the Cumberland Plateau and the Blue Ridge Province.

• Ogden River Scenic Byway (Utah)

  Visitors journeying up this narrow canyon enjoy alpine beauty, excellent recreational opportunities at sparkling Pineview Reservoir, before the byway climbs through the Wasatch-Cache National Forest to some of northern Utah's loveliest viewpoints

• Ohio River Scenic Byway - Illinois (Illinois)

• Oscar Wigington Scenic Byway (South Carolina)

  On this byway, visitors will be able to see some of the most scenic landscape in the Sumter National Forest.

• Ozark Highlands Scenic Byway (Arkansas)

  This byway includes 35 miles of Arkansas State Scenic Highway 21 from the southern border of the Ozark National Forest, near Clarksville, to the northern border, near the Upper Buffalo Wilderness and Buffalo National River.

• Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway (South Dakota)

  This byway will lead you on a delightful adventure as it winds its way around spiraling "pig-tail" shaped bridges, through six rock tunnels, among towering granite pinnacles and over pristine, pine-clad mountains. Highlights include Mt. Rushmore, Harney Peak, Sylvan Lake, the Needle's Eye and Cathedral Spires rock formations.

  Why is this spectacular scenic route called the Pig Trail Scenic Byway? Well, for one thing, the meandering nature of the route reminds one of a trail created by pigs wandering through the woods.

• Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway (Montana)

  The Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway bisects the Pioneer Mountains in some of the most breathtaking scenery in Montana. Along the way you may enjoy camping, hiking, fishing, the ghost town of Coolidge, and the remnants of the Elkhorn Mine.

• Rogue-Coquille Scenic Byway (Oregon)

  Traveling along the Wild and Scenic Rogue River, the Rogue-Coquille Scenic Byway offers beautiful wooded pathways, geologic formations, spectacular views, and hunting, fishing, whitewater rafting, boating and picnicking.

• Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway (Oregon)

  From rolling, oak-covered hills to towering coniferous forests, from roaring white water rapids to incised intercanyon lava flows, the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway invites you to experience 172 miles of diverse river and mountain landscapes. Drive alongside the Upper Rogue and North Umpqua Wild and Scenic Rivers that contain world-class fisheries.

• Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway (Georgia)

  Surrounded by the beauty of the Chattahoochee National Forest, the byway winds through the valleys and mountain gaps of the southern Appalachians. From the vistas atop Brasstown Bald, to the cooling mists of waterfalls, scenic wonders fill this region. Hike the Appalachian Trail or fish in a cool mountain stream.

• San Juan Skyway (Colorado)

• Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway (South Dakota)
