Driving the Byway

This complex byway route has several legs and two central loops going through the towns of Emmitsburg, Taneytown, Westminster, Uniontown, Detour, Thurmont, Linwood, Union Bridge, Johnsville, Libertytown, New Windsor, Unionville and and Mount Airy.

Upper Loop from Emmitsburg

  • Starting in Emmitsburg, take MD 140 east through Taneytown.
  • Continue on the Old Taneytown Road (MD 832) until it rejoins MD 140 just west of Westminster.
  • Turn south (right) on WMC Drive in Westminster.
  • (Alternatively, turn south from Old Taneytown Road on MD 84 to Uniontown, then west on Uniontown Road to Main Street in Westminster. This route is also part of the byway.)
  • Turn onto Main Street (MD 32) and proceed through Westminster.
  • Turn around at New Washington Road (MD 97) and return through downtown to Uniontown Road.
  • Turn west (left) on Uniontown Road and go to the town of Uniontown.
  • Continue on Middleburg Road.
  • Stay right (north) on Middleburg Road at the Y Road junction. Middleburg Road becomes MD 77 just past the Francis Scott Key Hwy (MD 194).
  • In Detour stay on MD 77 which becomes Rocky Ridge Road.
  • At Thurmont turn west (right) onto Main Street (MD 77/550) and proceed downtown.
  • This part of the byway ends at Frederick Road (MD 550/806.)

Lower Loop from Uniontown

  • From Uniontown Road in Uniontown, take Clear Ridge Road (MD 84) south.
  • Turn briefly west on MD 800 to Green Valley Road.
  • Go west on Green Valley Road (MD 75) through Linwood to Union Bridge.
  • Go south on Main Street (still on MD 75) through Union Bridge.
  • Stay on MD 75 past the Clemsonville Road turnoff to Johnsville.
  • Continue south (left), still on Green Valley Road (MD 75) which become Church Street in Libertytown.
  • Turn east at Main Street (MD 26) in Libertytown. The road become Liberty Road.
  • Turn northeast onto MD 31 (New Windsor Road.)
  • Continue on MD 31 through several small towns to New Windsor.
  • Proceed on High Street (MD 31) through downtown Windsor to Main Street. Turn right (east).
  • Go one block and turn north onto Green Valley Road.
  • Proceed on Green Valley Road (MD 75) north past Sulphur Springs Park to return to the junction with MD 800 where this loop of the byway ends.

Mount Airy Branch

  • From the junction of Main Street (MD 26) and New Windsor Road (MD 31) in Libertytown, take Liberty Road (MD 26) east to Clemsonville Road in Unionville.
  • Turn south (right) onto Clemsonville Road.
  • Briefly turn southeast (left) onto Unionville Road, then south (right) onto Woodville Road.
  • In Woodville turn east (left) onto Shirley Bohn Road.
  • Turn south (right) onto Buffalo Road. Continue until it ends at Main Street in Mount Airy.
  • Turn south (right) onto Main Street.
  • This part of the byway ends at the junction of Main Street and MD 27 just shy of I-70.
