First used by gold miners during the gold rush, the Rogue River is quickly becoming a must-see for any Southern Oregon tourist. The river got its name from the local Native American tribes that lived nearby. Early trappers and settlers called them “rogues” because of the intensity with which they fought to protect their resources from being exploited during the gold rush. Attacks between the settlers and natives turned into the Rogue River Wars, which eventually ended in 1856 with a last stand at Big Bend on the Rogue River. Today, the Rogue River is a river-rafting hotspot. There are several tour groups available, based in the near-by towns of Galice, Marial, and Grants Pass. With its Class IV rapids (only for the experienced) the Rogue River is definitely an exciting vacation spot filled with over a century of history. End your day on the road at the Historic Rogue River Ranch in Marial, where the byway ends. Like Grants Pass, this picturesque ranch was originally a gold mining community.
