Take a drive on the exhilarating Galice to Hellgate Back Country Byway, located in the southwestern corner of Oregon. This magnificent Back Country byway will take your breath away with its glorious views, diverse animal life, and wild class III and IV rapids.
Begin your trip in the town of Merlin, near the very beginning of the byway. Often referred to as the “Gateway to the Wild and Scenic Rogue River” due to its position near the river, this small town is home to many rafting and fishing outfitters. If you’re planning for an adventure on the Wild and Scenic Rogue River, be sure to stop here to stock up on all your whitewater needs.
If you’re looking for wet and wild rapids, you’ll love the Wild and Scenic Rogue River. This 84-mile ribbon of blue and white water in the Oregon wilderness runs right next to the byway and is home to diverse wildlife as well as white-knuckle rapids. Travelers will get a close-up view of many different kinds of animals, ranging from black bears and river otters to bald eagles and Canadian geese. Admire these fascinating fauna, but make sure you keep a safe distance when you encounter them. With views of majestic wildlife and class III and IV rapids, you’ll have a blast shooting down the river with your tour guide. Just remember to wear your life jacket!
If you prefer to experience nature on foot, check out the Rogue River Wild and Scenic Trail. This 40-mile trail begins in Grants Pass, about a mile south of the byway’s beginnings, and heads west towards the ocean. While most hikers spend several days on the trail, there is plenty to see even on a day hike. Pick up a map in Grants Pass and pack a lunch for a close look at the fascinating Oregon wilderness.
The byway ends at the outskirts of the Siskiyou National Forest. This 1.8 million-acre forest, established by Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, offers a large variety of recreational activities, appealing to anyone in need of some outdoor fun. Whether you’re camping, fishing, hiking, or skiing, you’ll love the rich greens, bright yellows, tall trees, and clear air in the Siskiyou National Forest.
Remember, some parts of the byway are closed during the winter months, but don't let that stop you from experiencing its vast outdoor splendor. Whether it’s a quiet day fishing and hiking or a wild day rafting, the Galice to Hellgate Back Country Byway offers adventure for everyone.
