Special Considerations
This byway is a Type I and Type II byway. The first 41 miles of the route follow paved, county roads (Type I). The remaining 50 miles turn to dirt and gravel (Type II) with a steep grade on the west entry to Hart Mountain, approximately one mile in length. Cars with four wheel drive or high-clearance trucks are usually recommended for this portion of the route. Under good conditions, however, a passenger car can navigate the road. The byway is open year round although snow and mud may cause unexpected closures.
