Special Considerations
The Black Hills Byway crosses five ranches so if you go hunting be careful where and what you shoot.
There are no services provided along the way so be sure to bring your own food and water.
The byway has been classified as a Type III, which means that 4-wheel drive or all-terrain vehicles are required. The roads are not surfaced but are regularly maintained.
Restrictions
The roads are unpaved but safe for large vehicles during dry weather. Some of the roads contain narrow drop-offs or are confined by steep cliffs so be careful when passing and going around turns. Remember that uphill traffic has the right of way.
No motor homes or vehicles more than 20 feet long are permitted on the roads.
If you want to try your hand at some of the side routes, you must have four-wheel drive.
