Places to Visit

  • Brandywine Creek State Park (DE)

    This 933-acre retreat was once a dairy farm owned by the du Pont family. The park offers some of the Brandywine Valley’s best views, bird watching, nature preserves, and 14 miles of trails through woodlands, meadows, and stream banks.

    Directions: At the intersection of Route 52 and 100, take Route 100 north to Adams Dam Road. Turn right on Adams Dam Road. The park main entrance is on the left.

  • Centreville Village (DE)

    Centreville Village was established by Quakers in the 17th Century. The village is a great place to stroll, bike, dine, and shop. Farmers' Market is held every Thursday in season.

  • Delaware Art Museum (DE)

    The Delaware Art Museum was founded in 1912. It has numerous works by Brandywine Valley artists, including famous illustrator N.C. Wyeth.

    Directions: From Route 52 turn right onto Bancroft Parkway which leads to Kentmere Parkway. The Art Museum sits where the two parkways meet.

  • Delaware History Museum (DE)

    The Delaware History Museum is a great stop for those interested in the history of the du Pont family, Delaware, and the United States.

    Directions: Starting on 11th Street at the Hotel du Pont, go 6 blocks south on Market Street. The Delaware History Museum is located on the west side of the street.

  • Delaware Museum of Natural History (DE)

    The Delaware Museum of Natural History was created by John du Pont. Museum highlights include an African watering hole, a Great Barrier Reef exhibit, and life-sized dinosaur skeletons.

  • Gibraltar Mansion and Gardens (DE)

    Hugh Rodney Sharp and Isabella du Pont Sharp purchased Gibraltar in 1909 and built the du Pont mansion. It has a historic garden featuring a pavilion, statuary, and plants.

  • Goodstay House and Gardens (DE)

    The property was the home of Ellen du Pont Wheelwright and her husband Robert, who created a horticultural gem featuring a reflecting pool, magnolia walk, garden rooms, and a woodland garden with a stream.

  • Hagley Museum and Library (DE)

    Hagley Museum and Library sits on 235 acres along the banks of the Brandywine River. It is the site of the du Pont gunpowder works and the ancestral home and gardens of the du Pont family.

    Directions: Turn right onto Route 100/141 at St. Joseph's on the Brandywine Church, go a few hundred feet to the Hagley entrance on the left.

  • Hotel du Pont and du Pont Theatre (DE)

    Built in 1913 on Rodney Square, the Hotel du Pont was conceived by Pierre S. du Pont. It incorporates the du Pont Theatre, which presents Broadway shows and Brandywine artists' paintings.

  • Inn at Montchanin Village (DE)

    The Inn at Montchanin Village was established for laborers who worked at nearby du Pont powder mills. Now, it provides a unique setting of cottage guest rooms, a restaurant, and a conference center.
