Mohawk Towpath Byway
Waterford Museum, NY

This was constructed in 1830 by Hugh White, brother to Canvass White, who developed hydraulic cement for construction of the Erie Canal. The museum overlooks the Mohawk River and Peebles Island, where it was moved after narrowly avoiding demolition in 1964. Displays and artifacts from various canals are exhibited here, telling the history of the area from Native American occupants through Dutch Traders to the history of the canal.
