Follow the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway along the shores of the Atlantic in sunny Florida, taking the time to stop at some of America's oldest historical sites.

Start: Ponte Vedra Beach
Begin your tour along the byway in Ponte Vedra Beach, the northern gateway to the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway.

Stop 1: Historic St. Augustine
Directions from previous place: From Ponte Vedra Beach, follow A1A Highway south through the communities of Palm Valley and Vilano Beach. Cross the Vilano Bridge to enter St. Augustine.

The city contains more than 2,500 historic structures dating from the colonial and Flagler eras. The next stops on our tour will take you through the best of these attractions.

Stop 2: Castillo de San Marcos National Monument
Directions from previous place: Once across the Vilano Bridge, continue to the junction of San Marco Avenue. Turn left to continue along A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway. Continue along San Marco Avenue to the Castillo's entrance.
Distance from Previous Site: 1 miles / 1.6 km Travel Time from Previous Site: 3 minutes Suggested Time at This Site: 1 hour Star-shaped Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort and the best-preserved example of Spanish colonial fortification built in the continental United States. Tour the grounds and rooms of the fort, taking in historical exhibits from each of the fort's many occupants. Volunteers in historical costume are also on hand to give live demonstrations of guns, cannons, and other aspects of historical life.

Directions from previous place: Go southeast on FL A1A and follow it for 21.6 miles. Turn left onto Mala Compra Dr. and follow it to the beach front park.
