Special Considerations

The surface changes from paved to oiled gravel to loose gravel. Good tires are highly recommended when traveling this backway. The Forest Service also recommends only high clearance vehicles attempt the backway westward from Kelley Guard Station.

Restrictions

The byway starts as a two-lane paved road from Kemmerer to Lake Viva Naughton. It then changes to oiled gravel, then loose gravel at the forest boundary. The road is not completely accessible during winter and early spring, and travel is not advised in heavy rain or snow.
