Another natural characteristic that makes Pyramid Lake unique is the tufa formations that surround the lake. The tufa formations at Pyramid Lake are made of calcium carbonate deposits formed by precipitation over hot springs. Many of the formations are quite large, creating shapes that provoke the imagination. The lake itself is named for a pyramid shaped formation.
