Special Considerations

This byway is mostly two lane, narrow and heavily traveled. It serves as a short-cut for locals traveling to Santa Barbara from Santa Ynez Valley, Buellton, Lompoc, Solvang and Santa Maria.

The highway winds uphill to the ridge and descends rapidly down the other side. The heaviest commute times are 6:30-8:30 am and 4:30-6:00 pm. Sundays can be hectic, but weekends and midday are the least traveled times.

On a clear day you can see the islands in the Santa Barbara Channel as you near the ridge, but caution must be exercised as it is very difficult to view and safely drive the twisty uphill lane simultaneously.

Restrictions

Rush hour traffic often occurs from 6:30-8:30 a.m. and 4:30-6:00 p.m.
